The UK has an imbalanced approach to innovation according to a recent Innovation Map from the European Research Centre, with Oxford (27%) trumping the UK’s digital titans, Manchester (18%) and London (17%) for product and service innovation.
The research reveals some interesting imbalances across the country. Yet all too often across the north/south divide, enterprises of all sizes are not yet geared to best support the future of innovation, and are too reliant on the habits of old.
As technology permeates our everyday lives, boardrooms need to reframe their thinking away from posing the question ‘What is your digital strategy’ and reframing it too ‘What is your strategy for a digital world’. To answer this businesses need to get an understanding of the underlying principles that make them ready to hack the future of technology – and how culture, communication and collaboration all impact its ability to innovate.
What is innovation culture and how do we understand it? It’s certainly much easier to measure a click on an email, or a redemption of a voucher in store. Businesses often avoid gaps in their culture and communication, because it’s hard to understand.

The Digital Innovation project at Manchester Metropolitan University is seeking to understand the state of UK innovation culture with the help of the Rare: Innovation Index.
The purpose of the research is to understand what cultures and behaviours best support innovation within businesses of all shapes and sizes, and to understand how we can hack the future of digital innovation in the UK.
